As the court spokesman told news agency “PenzaNews,” the offense was committed back in 2012.

“It has been established that in the period from January 15 to July 13, a citizen addressed Vitaly Melikyan, who held the position of Oktyabrsky district prosecutor of Penza, and asked for help in freeing his friend from criminal liability. The prosecutor agreed and promised to help for a fee of 500 thousand rubles. On 13 July 2012 in the building of the Prosecutor’s Office of Oktyabrsky district of Penza, the man gave Vitaly Melikyan the money received from the mother of his friend in the stated amount. The prosecutor took the money, assuring that the convict will soon be free,” the agency interlocutor said.

According to him, Vitaly Melikyan did not intend to keep his promise, as he already knew that the issue related to the termination of the criminal proceedings is not in his competence.

“At the hearing, Vitaly Melikyan pleaded guilty to the crime. The case has been considered in a special order of the trial. Court sentenced him to 2,5 years of imprisonment in a penal colony. The convict was also deprived of the right to occupy any position in the Prosecutor’s Office and positions related to the implementation of criminal procedure in other law enforcement agencies for a period of 2 years. In addition, Vitaly Melikyan was deprived of the title “Honored Worker of the Prosecutor’s Office,” the agency interlocutor said.
