Number of HIV-positive residents grew by nearly 14% in Penza region in six months

Penza, 21 July 2014. PenzaNews. The number of HIV-positive residents of the Penza region has increased by 13.7% for the period from January to June 2014, the Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Well-Being of the region told news agency “PenzaNews.”

The department noted that in Penza the HIV incidence rate is 19.7% above the average regional rate.

“In addition, the excess of the average regional incidence is noted in Maloserdobinsky and Mokshansky areas, as well as in Zarechny and Kuznetsk. The proportion of infections when using intravenous drugs remains high at 38.8%, which is 1.8% higher than during the same period last year,” the press service representative noted.

The department spokesperson added that there have been no cases of infection through blood donation or medical procedures.

“During the current year, the Penza region became home for 20 people who were diagnosed with HIV in other regions of the country,” the department interlocutor said.

The press service representative added that the number of deaths among HIV-positive residents amounted to 35 cases, which is 13 more than a year ago.

“The average life interval with the diagnosis continues to grow and now averages at 11.96 years,” the press-speaker for the regional department of the Federal Service for Supervision of Consumer Rights Protection and Human Well-Being summarized.
