Penza zoo will hold public polar bear feeding on February 27

Penza, 25 February 2015. PenzaNews. Public feeding of the polar bear will be organized at the Penza zoo on Friday, February 27.

The grand predator will have a public meal at 14.00.

“Every year, on February 27, the world celebrates the International Polar Bear Day. […] The event aims to let people learn more about polar bears and draw public attention to their protection. Usually, environmental organizations plan various public events and educational activities on this day,” the Penza zoo officials told PenzaNews agency.

The young polar bear was discovered by the Yamal fishermen swimming across the Tadibe-Yaha river on September 30, 2011.

Later on, the animal was transferred to Penza zoo that agreed to set up a special enclosure for him.

The animal had been temporarily kept at the Moscow zoo until he was transferred to the Penza zoo in late November 2012.

The polar bear’s name was chosen in a contest. Among the suggested names were Putin, Vasily, Marco Polo, Taras, Fedotiy, Abelix, Adam, Ivanhoe, Iceberg, Baloo, Bambi, Bestia, Vlastelin, Wrangell, Gavrila, Hercules, Ermak, Zhemchug, Korol, Ledenets, Lomonosov, Matros, Nalim, Polarnik, Prince, Rafinad, Sakharok, Snezhok, Taimyr, Umka, Tsezar and Eskimos.

According to the results of the contest, the polar bear was nicknamed “Beliy” [White].
