Penza, 29 July 2016. PenzaNews. The acting principal of the Penza State Technological University (PenzGTU) Vasily Moiseev was taken into custody until September 28 after he had been charged with abuse of office and embezzlement.

The custody decision was made by the Oktyabrsky Penza city area court on Wednesday, July 28, Lyudmila Fomina, senior assistant of the head of the regional Investigative Committee for media relations, told PenzaNews.

The crimes were discovered thanks to coordinated work of the Investigative Committee and the Penza region FSB department, she clarified.

“The police are currently investigating the criminal case: they are working on gathering evidence and establishing the full picture of the criminal deeds,” she added.

As PenzaNews reported earlier, Vasily Moiseev is currently facing a criminal case under Part 3, Art. 285 of the Criminal Code, “Abuse of Office.”

According to investigation, there was an illegal scheme at the university that allowed students to bribe their way out of courseworks, tests and other things that could lead them to getting expelled if failed: the students were forced to buy already-completed sure-to-pass sets from professors and lecturers.

The investigators searched the office and home of the acting university principal, and seized large amounts of money – 7 million rubles, $60,000, and 35,000 euros, as well as an assortment of precious metals, such as at least 60 kg of silver jewelry.
