Penza, 25 February 2022. PenzaNews. Border guards detained a resident of Penza, who, having left the territory of Chukotka on a snowmobile into the waters of the Bering Strait, tried to illegally cross the border of Russia and get to Alaska. This is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the regional Federal Security Service (FSB).

“According to the investigation body, a resident of Penza, who arrived in the urban-type settlement of Provideniya in early January 2022, planned to leave for the territory of the United States bypassing the existing checkpoints across the state border of the Russian Federation. At the same time, due to circumstances beyond the control of the citizen and the persons accompanying him, this illegal act was not completed due to their detention by a border patrol while traveling on a snowmobile in the direction of St. Lawrence Island, Alaska, USA,” the agency said in a statement.

It clarifies that the violator did not reach 1 km to the shore.

A criminal case has been initiated against a resident of Penza under Part 1 of Article 30, Part 1 of Article 322 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Illegal crossing of the state border of the Russian Federation.”

The circumstances of the crime are being established.

The press service of the regional FSB told RIA Novosti that the violator was 18 years old.

“He’s been preparing for two years, then went there by a snowmobile. The measure of restraint is an undertaking not to leave a place of residence. Information about the persons accompanying him is not disclosed in the interests of the investigation,” the press service said.
