Penza, 20 February 2016. PenzaNews. A resident of the Shemysheika area of the Penza region was found guilty in murdering an elderly woman and sentenced to 9 years in a maximum-security penal colony.

In September 2015, the man, while being drunk, hit an elderly woman at least 15 times with two axes after a quarrel; as a result, the victim died at the scene, an official representative of the Gorodische city area court told PenzaNews agency.

“The defendant fully admitted his fault. The court has taken into account the type and scope of threat the crime poses to the society, the information about the accused which received an overall negative description at his place of residence, and a big administrative violation record, as well as the opinion of the daughter of the deceased,” he explained.

The representative also added that the defendant admitted his guilt and voluntarily assisted the investigation in gathering evidence and establishing the picture of the crime, which the court saw as active assistance in the discovery and investigation of the crime.

“Another alleviating circumstance was the fact that the defendant fully abandoned the criminal purpose. There were no aggravating circumstances,” the court representative noted.
