Russian and French fashion historian, an interior decorator, a stage designer, an author of popular books and articles, a lecturer, a TV host, an honorable member of Russian Academy of Arts and a head of Moscow Academy of Fashion Alexander Vasilyev visited Penza on Friday, May 25. The guest from the capital gave master class “I am in Fashion Today. Modern Trends of 2012,” held a show “Fashion Court” and spoke with representatives of local mass media.

Alexander Vasilyev admitted that he had been interested in fashionable tendencies since his childhood.

“I enjoyed having fashionable sister, stylish mother and fashionable father who went abroad and brought me the clothes that people did not see in the USSR. I have never worn Soviet clothes,” said the historian of fashion.

“I played neither toy cars nor soldiers, besides, I do not drink beer, I do not play football and I still do not know how to drive a car — I have a driver. And if you make me watch football, I will run away,” added Alexander Vasilyev.

The TV host noted that he did not consider his clothes style outrageous and felt comfortable wearing any of his suits.

“Undressed person looks outrageous for me,” joked the historian of fashion.

Answering the question concerning the universal advice for each woman how to be fashionable, Alexander Vasilyev declared that such advice does not exist.

“It is possible to give universal advice only in cleaning a sink or washing linen, but there is no such advice in clothing. Fashion is very individual and every woman is unique. They are of different height and weight, have various hair colors, different religion and profession. We should open the world of high fashion at the age of 15, it is very late to open it at the age of 35,” said Alexander Vasilyev.

Thus, he emphasized that we can say nothing about the inner world of a person judging only by his or her clothes.

“There is such a profession — a stylist, which can create “Babylon” of your hair, put on make-up, give you heeled shoes, change clothes somehow and it is always very superficial. Person’s inner world includes the books he reads, music he listens to and human relations. Fashion very seldom displays person’s inner world. It is possible, only if a person is eccentric and wears unfashionable clothes, wears the way he likes. But as usual, these people are local crazy ones. They are not afraid to express their inner world and to use, for example, candy wrappers in their hair. There are such people in every city, one or two of them. And all other people in our country are cowardly, they are afraid to show their attitude to fashion, especially males. Women are not interested in fashion; they want to catch man’s eyes. But fashion and eyes’ attracting do not coincide with each other, they are absolutely different things, don’t think that if you strip naked, you will become fashionable, it is ridiculous,” explained the TV host.

Alexander Vasilyev told the reporters that he considered Penza Art Gallery very valuable and many-sided and that he tried to go there every time he visited Penza. Besides, the historian of fashion did some shopping in Penza antique shops.
