“The gramophone was discovered in one of the antique shops of Penza, purchased for 40 thousand rubles by the members of organization “Narovchatskoe zemlyachestvo” and handed over to the museum exposition,” the Acting Head of the department of culture and archive of the Penza region Evgeny Shilov told news agency “PenzaNews.”
He noted that the gramophone, which is over 100 years old, is in perfect condition.
“When it was delivered to Narovchat, they immediately put one of the records available at the museum on the gramophone,” the agency interlocutor commented.
Evgeny Shilov said that acquisition of the gramophone is not a one-time event, but a part of systematic work on preservation of cultural heritage.
“Since 2000, when the organization was founded, its members have acquired stuffed birds, a bear, a fox, unique manuscripts, books, photographs and other artifacts for the museum,” Evgeny Shilov pointed out.
Gramophone is a device for recording and playing audio gramophone records.
It is a modification of the phonograph, invented by Charles Cros and Thomas Edison independently in 1877.
Emile Berliner, reading the works of Charles Cros, decided using the discs instead of cylinders for recording and playing the records.
The new invention was patented on 26 September 1887.
