Penza, 27 November 2012. PenzaNews. In general, the yields of all crops in the Penza region in 2012 came to equal the expected indices. This was announced by the Minister of Agriculture of the region Ivan Firyulin during a press conference on Tuesday, November 27. “This year, the region received 2,100 thousand tons of sugar beet, 803 thousand tons of grain, and 198 thousand tons of sunflower. Moreover, we collected 570 thousand tons of potatoes and 157 thousand tons of other vegetables,” he specified.

Ivan Firyulin stressed that the yield of sugar beet in the Penza region will allow the plant in Kamenka and Zemetchino almost completely to manufacture sugar from vegetables grown in the region.

“Last year, Zemetchinsky area sugar plant used to buy large amounts of sugar beets in the Ryazan and Tambov regions,” he said.

He added that in 2012, Penza manufacturers started to export this crop: one of the main buyers is Mordovia.

However, Ivan Firyulin noted that the crop yield of grains was worse than expected — around 2 tons per hectare less.

“This is largely due to the fact that the business was not ready to withstand the ever changing weather,” he concluded.
