Penza, 2 May 2012. PenzaNews. Squally wind gusting up to 20 meters per second struck the region on Wednesday night, May 2. It rooted out an illumination pole in the center of Penza, broke a dozen of trees and damaged the roofs of the dramatic art center “House of Meyerhold,” Regional Museum of Local Lore and several other buildings.

According to the acting head of the Culture and archive department of the Penza region Evgeny Shilov, the situation with the roofs of subordinated institutions is under control.
“Meyerhold house-museum is currently under maintenance work. All the artifacts and furniture are removed from there, construction team is working in the museum. Part of the roof had already been disclosed. In the near future it will be completely overhauled,” he said.
According to Evgeny Shilov, the Museum of Local Lore was recently renovated, so the strong wind only lifted one line of the roofing iron.
“As soon as the signal was received, the chief engineer has organized the necessary work, the slope was reinforced. The measures have been taken, the roof is not damaged and it will not leak,” he added.
The Penza Office of Civil Defense and Emergencies addressed people of the city and warned that widespread break of live power transmission lines may occur on the territory of the municipality due to weather conditions.
“In case of bare wire detection independent actions must not be taken. Approach to bare wires is not recommended,” the statement says.
