13 people poisoned by chlorine vapors in swimming pool in Penza private sauna

Penza, 13 August 2012. PenzaNews. 13 people were hospitalized at City Clinical Hospital named after G.A. Zakharyin in Penza with chlorine poisoning after swimmimg in a pool.

“All the victims, aged 17 to 23 years old, were swimming in the pool in a private sauna in Penza on August 9 from 21.00 to 24.00 while intoxicated. Even when swimming, they experienced smarting and tearing eyes, stuffiness in nose and scratchy throat later complemented with dry cough. The young people sought medical help only the next morning,” the press service of consumer protection agency Rospotrebnadzor of the Penza region told news agency “PenzaNews.”

The department noted that on admission to the hospital, the young people’s state was assessed as moderate but now the patients are already being prepared for discharge.

“According to preliminary data, the cause of poisoning was overdose of chlorine-containing products used to disinfect swimming pool water – Longafor pills or Khloriteks granules,” said the press service of Rospotrebnadzor.
