Drunk driver shot by police officer during arrest in Penza region

Penza, 21 April 2014. PenzaNews. A 40-year-old resident of Zemetchino village, the Penza region, driving “Mercedes” intoxicated, died from a gunshot wound in the chest during his detention. The incident is under investigation.

“Pre-investigation showed that the traffic police officers were trying to stop “Mercedes,” the intoxicated driver of which had been previously held criminally liable. During the pursuit, the man did obey to the legitimate demands of the police to stop the vehicle, and repeatedly collided with traffic police cars trying to escape. After warning shots in the air, the driver failed to stop the car and tried to run over one of the inspectors. Police officer fired in the direction of the car. The driver was wounded in the chest. He was taken to the hospital where he died later,” the press service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the region told news agency PenzaNews on Monday morning, April 21.
The ministry added that the regional management of the Ministry of Internal Affairs arrived at the scene to establish all the circumstances of the incident.
“The officers of operational and investigative department of internal security of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Penza region are verifying the evidence, further assessment of the actions of the police officer will be based on the results of this verification,” the press service added.
