Criminal case opened against school students who made pensioner combust in Penza region

Penza, 21 October 2014. PenzaNews. The police has opened a criminal case under Art. 4, rule 111 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Wilful infliction of aggravated injuries” after the death of an 87-year-old citizen of Zarechny, the Penza region, after 17% burns caused by 9-year-old school students.

“According to investigators, on October 8, 2014, an elderly man had been passing by the house No. 39 on ulitsa Konstitutsii in Zarechny, when a teenager who was standing nearby with other teens threw a lit lighter at him, which caused the man’s clothes to combust. Later, he was brought into hospital care with multiple burns. On October 19, the elderly man passed away in intensive care due to sustained injuries complicated by burn disease,” Lyudmila Fomina, Senior Assistant of the Head of the Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation in Penza, told PenzaNews agency.

She added that the identities of the teenagers have been established.

“They are 9-year-old school students who were not brought into the Juvenile Division’s attention before,” the agency interlocutor noted.

Lyudmila Fomina added that the investigation will issue a verdict on the actions of the teenagers and the people who were responsible for schooling their children properly.
