Penza woman lost 85 thousand rubles in car-winning contest scam
Penza, 4 November 2014. PenzaNews. A 26-year old Penza citizen was scammed after receiving a text message saying she had won a car in a contest.
“The lady called the phone listed in the message. An unknown man who introduced himself as a radio DJ explained she needs to pay the shipping and registration charges to get the car. Following his instructions, the victim transferred over 85,000 rubles to his bank account,” the press service of the regional Ministry of Internal Affairs department told PenzaNews agency.
According to the officials, the young woman admitted she knew of such scamming techniques, but still believed the unknown man.
“We are currently investigating the crime and deciding on opening a criminal case. The police are taking the measures in order to establish the identities of the scammers,” the press service said.
