Man transfers money to scammer, buys sweets after receiving “city hall” call

Penza, 11 October 2015. PenzaNews. A Penza citizen, 27, fell victim to a fraud after publishing an online ad on Avito.ru in an attempt to sell a laptop computer for 32,000 rubles.

“He received a call from an unknown person who introduced himself as a staff member of the Penza city administration, said he wants to buy a laptop but has only large banknotes at hand, and asked the man to buy a pack of sweets, transfer 1,700 rubles to a cellphone account and drive to the city hall building,” the press service of the Penza region Ministry of the Interior department informed PenzaNews agency.

The man followed the requests of the unknown person, but later learned nobody would come out of the city hall to meet him.

“The fraud is currently under investigation. The police are identifying the culprits. The unknown person was calling from a number registered in an other region,” the press service said.
