Penza, 18 February 2017. PenzaNews. 239 people died as the result of traffic accidents in the Penza region in 2016. Such information was announced during the meeting of the commission for road safety provision under the regional government.

1,910 traffic accidents occurred during 12 months altogether. 2,649 people were injured.

The maximum number of traffic accidents happened on Friday and Saturday.

93.5% of the traffic accidents were caused by violation of traffic rules. 248 traffic accidents were caused by drunk drivers, 63 people died and 376 ones – were injured.

41% of deaths in traffic accidents occurred on federal roads.

309 accidents happened on regional roads, 79 people died, 463 were injured.

The largest number of fatal accidents was registered in the Penza, Belinsky, Zemetchinsky, Kolysheysky, and Vadinsky areas. An area of accidents was formed on the road "Penza-Shemysheyka-Lopatino", where six fatal accidents were registered in 2016.
67 pedestrians were killed on roads, which is 13.8% more than in 2015.

Since the beginning of 2017, 27 people died in traffic accidents. The main cause of fatal accidents, which amount to 18, is violation of overtaking rules crossing into oncoming traffic, the press service of the regional government reports.
