Penza surgeon Nikolai Baulin, 83, passes away

Penza, 10 January 2016. PenzaNews. Nikolai Baulin, surgeon, professor, Honorary Citizen of Penza, 83, has passed away on Saturday, January 9, after a prolonged illness.

“Over the years of practice, Nikolai Baulin completed a vast number of incredibly difficult and unique surgeries, saved dozens of thousands people. Deeply devoted to his profession, he created a unique school of apprentices and followers. He taught more than 3,000 doctors under the postgraduate studies and advance training program. His authority among people, surgeons and medical professions was indisputable,” says the obituary published on the website of the Penza region Health Ministry.

The professor will forever remain in the minds of Penza people as an intelligent expert, groundbreaking professional, relentless researcher and true brainstormer of surgery and related fields, it says.

The visitation will be held at 12.00-13.00 of Monday, January 11, at the Penza Medical Refresher Institute.

Nikolai Afanasyevich Baulin was born on 5 February 1932 in Pustyn village of the Pachelma area in the Penza region.

He graduated cum laude the Penza College of Obstetricians and First Aid in 1949, and received a degree of the Kazan State Medical Institute in 1995. Following that, the doctor worked as a surgeon in area hospitals of Poim and Nikolsk for 20 years.

In 1975, Nikolai Baulin was moved to the central city, where he worked as an assistant, later – professor of Surgery at the Penza Medical Refresher Institute.

He held the post of the institute dean in 1981, and headed the Surgery Department in the institute between 1981 and 2008.

Nikolai Baulin managed the research and practice activities of the surgery clinic for 260 patients under the Surgery Department of the Zakharyin city clinical hospital with five specialized branches.

He was the first medical professional to introduce a practice of ventroplasty with local tissues to treat complicated relapsing postoperative hernia.

Nikolai Afanasyevich published over 200 research papers and abstracts, as well as four monographs. He was the owner of 15 patents and inventor’s certificates, along with more than 80 rationalization proposal certificates.

He personally supervised 18 successful master’s theses and 6 habilitational theses.

Nikolai Baulin was the Distinguished Doctor of Russia, Honorary Citizen of Poim village and Penza city, award winner of the national public recognition award “Family of Russia,” holder of the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and the letter of commendation of the Penza region governor.

He was the founder of the Baulin-Gostev dynasty of doctors.
