“They will carry out a series of activities, the main purpose of which is to bring the highly professional care to the population of our region. A complex operation on the pancreas will be performed — gastropancreatoduodenal resection, which lasts an average of 4 to 5 hours,” the chief doctor of the Penza regional oncology dispensary Vitaly Serebryakov informed.

He said that the operation will be performed to three patients by Professor Yuri Patyutko, MD, head of the department of surgery for liver and pancreas tumors RCRC.

“We have been carrying out such operations in the last three years, but an invitation to high-level experts will, first of all, assess our base, and secondly, our colleagues will assist the professor and learn, perhaps, new technology. Plus he is a high-level expert [...] able to assess the qualifications of our doctors regarding the performance of such complex surgical procedures. This is a so-called master-class,” the chief doctor of oncology center commented.

Vitaly Serebryakov added that they chose the most difficult patients in terms of treatment, who will be will consulted by the leading Moscow specialists.

“We have selected those patients who are difficult for us in terms of diagnostics today. After receiving relevant recommendations of our colleagues, some of them will be treated in the Penza regional oncology dispensary, but if we make a decision that they need medical assistance in Moscow, then they will be treated there on the federal quota,” he said.

Moscow experts — deputy director of the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Cancer Research Center of Radiology, the Executive Director of the Association of oncologists of Russia, Alexander Petrovsky, and MD, leading researcher at the Department of chemotherapy and combined treatment of malignant tumors Ludmila Zhukova — are scheduled to give recommendations for 15-20 patients.

According to Alexander Petrovsky, one of the objectives of the federal oncology institutions is education, and communication is important for both Penza and Moscow specialists.
“On the one hand, this is an additional school, the opportunity to receive current knowledge and understand how to treat patients well. On the other hand, it is an opportunity for the federal facility to understand the problems of a particular region and offer possible solutions,” the doctor said.

During the press conference of physicians with the media, Yuri Patyutko already started the first operation.
As soon as the meeting with journalists was over, oncologists rushed to the hospital conference room for consultations. In the next room there were patients waiting for them.

Each of them met the local doctor who helped Moscow experts to inform on the patient’s history. After getting acquainted with the history of the disease and prescriptions, receiving the missing information, Aleksander Petrovsky and Lyudmila Zhukova voiced their recommendations to each of the patients.
