"The topic under discussion is of great importance as it [cancer mortality] occupies the second place in the general mortality of Russian population. A similar situation is in the Penza region. The dynamics of problem development is increasing every year and nowadays death rate from cancer exceeds mortality rate from cardiovascular diseases or external factors," he noted.

The minister reminded that assistance to cancer patients is provided within a three-level system that includes 29 cancer detection and 45 consulting rooms, 116 oncology and 40 radiology day care beds, 490 beds in the in-patient departments of haematology, radiology, chemotherapy, and resuscitation, as well as 15 haematological and oncological beds for children.

"In 2017 the Penza region reached all indicative indices for oncology service including mortality from neoplasms," Vladimir Stryuchkov emphasized.

He said that for eight months of 2018, 1,780 people had died from neoplasms in the Penza region, which is 86 people less than in the same period last year.

"However, despite the fact that it decreased by 3.9%, mortality from neoplasms exceeds the indicative index set by Russian presidential decree №598 ["On improving state policy in healthcare"] by 1.2% and the index set by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation – by 3.9%," the head of the regional Ministry of Health said.

The Minister added that the Penza region occupied the 39th place in the country, and the 11th –in the Volga Federal district by the level of mortality from neoplasms.
