Penza, 5 July 2012. PenzaNews. Secretary of the Communist Party Central Committee, State Duma Deputy Yuri Afonin considers Russia’s forthcoming accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO) one of the major and most pressing problems against which Communists declaim. This was stated by him during a press conference at the press center of news agency PenzaNews on Thursday, July 5.

“The terms and conditions of entry into the WTO are now beyond the scope of our economy. Those rudiments of food industry and remains of defense industry will actually be destroyed under the impact of accession to the WTO,” Yuri Afonin said.

He noted that the Communist Party and Just Russia Party factions in the State Duma filed a request to the Constitutional Court to verify the constitutionality of the protocol on Russia’s WTO accession which has not yet entered into force.

During the press conference State Duma Deputy compared Russian and foreign producers with the athletes.

“After Russia’s accession to the WTO, there will be two athletes entering the final straight – a trained strong professional athlete (Western companies) and an exhausted old one (Russian companies). Guess who wins. Therefore, lack of competitiveness of Russian economy will lead to its almost complete degradation and unemployment. We will deal with this problem very seriously,” Yuri Afonin concluded.
