“The New Year night is a serious test for cellular networks. As the experience of the past few years shows, the peak time – 23.00 to 00.30 – sees an increase of a normal day’s peak phone calls amount by 2-3 times, and up to 6 times more sent text messages. Another common trend on the New Year night is more cross-country and international calls than usual,” Alexei Bryukhachev, director for the Penza region branch of MegaFon, told PenzaNews agency.

According to him, the company currently conducts a set of complex network modernization measures to help customers remain constantly online and able to congratulate even their friends and relatives abroad.

“In particular, our professionals are increasing the network technical capacity in all the region, expanding the maximum connection capabilities in mass gathering areas, and adjust it to allow more cross-country and international voicecalls,” Alexei Bryukhachev explained.
The crews are also checking reserve data and power communications, and testing the backup diesel generators in case of blackouts, he added.

“To keep the MegaFon network in the Penza region online and working during the New Year festivities, several emergency repair crews of over 20 professionals will stay on watch 24/7, ready to rectify any issue as soon as possible. For comparison, normally we keep less than 7 people on nightly watch,” Alexei Bryukhachev explained.

Moreover, MegaFon Centralized Network Control Headquarters will increase their level of network monitoring between December 25 and January 15 to quickly identify and rectify any breaches or malfunctions, he also pointed out.
