Prison population drops in Penza region

Penza, 24 January 2012. PenzaNews. The number of inmates in prisons of the Penza region dropped in 2011. Head of the regional office of the Russian Federal Service for Execution of Punishments, colonel of internal service Aleksandr Gorshkov reported about the new numbers during a meeting of the board to discuss the results of operations and office work and production and economic activities of the department for the past year.

“As of January 1st, 2012, there are 6 769 prisoners in the Penza region. In early 2011 the number was about 7 500 persons,” he pointed out.

According to Aleksandr Gorshkov, the occupancy rate in penitentiary institutions of the Penza region is 88 % of the established capacity while the occupancy rate in pre-trial detention centers and other premises used for pre-trial detention is 60%.

He also added that about 5 000 persons, including 79 minors, are currently registered with criminal enforcement inspections.

“A total of 10 300 persons were registered with the criminal enforcement inspections of the Penza region in 2011. Of those, 1 600 persons were sentenced to mandatory service and 632 to correctional service,” Aleksandr Gorshov reported.
