Penza, 5 August 2013. PenzaNews. Fourteen road signs, the advantage of which is LED lamps using solar-power were installed on federal highways P208 “Tambov - Penza,” M6 “Kaspiy,” M21 “Volgograd – Kamensk – Shakhtinskiy” and P228 “Sizran – Saratov – Volgograd.”

According to the press service of the Federal Road Agency, the new technology can improve the perception of traffic signs and reduce the number of accidents by 70% on average.

“Road signs with LED lamps, working with solar panels have been installed on federal highways near pedestrian crossings. Solar energy accumulated during the day makes the signs light up at night attracting the attention of drivers,” the Federal Road Agency said.

The press service noted that LED signs are much more efficient than traditional ones because they are visible to the driver at over 800 meter-distance.

“The signs provide quick return on investments due to the fact that there is no need to connect to any electricity network. Cost savings on electricity for lighting each traffic sign can be up to 1,5–2 thousand rubles a year,” the press service summed up.
