Ash tree leading Penza region green symbol in “Alley of Russia” vote

Penza, 5 August 2014. PenzaNews. European ash tree is leading among other plants as the green symbol of the Penza region, according to the intermediate results of “The Alley of Russia” event.

“40% of voters spoke in favor of this tree. Barberry Ottawa scored 11% of the vote, Mahonia holm and blue sedge got 5%, and small-leaved lime earned the votes of 37%,” the press service of the Ministry of Forestry, Hunting and Nature of the region told news agency PenzaNews on Tuesday, August 5.

The department noted that lime was on top when the voting began, but then the picture changed.

“Other regions also voted for European ash. It scored 31% of the vote in North Ossetia – Alania, 24% in the Tula region, 17% in Kursk and Orel regions each, 14% in the Smolensk region, and 11% in Moscow,” the ministry added.

“Alley of Russia” is an all-Russian patriotic event.

As a part of the event, citizens of Russia will choose green symbols of their regions during the summer of 2014. Afterwards, the chosen tree symbols will be planted in the natural and patriotic park “Alley of Russia,” which symbolizes the indivisible unity of the country and promotes the principles of ecological culture and caring attitude towards the rich nature of Russia.

The first “Alley of Russia” will be created in Crimea.

The action was organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation and “Nature” foundation for environment protection.

The event is a part of the Year of Culture in Russia.
