Chemical weapons in Penza region to be eliminated by end 2015

Penza, 27 August 2014. PenzaNews. Elimination of chemical weapons will be completed in the Penza region by the end of 2015, said Sergei Palamarchuk, chief of the public relations group of “Leonidovka” chemical weapons elimination facility.

“As of now, we have destroyed 99.9% of VX-type toxic substances, 100% of sarin, 98.9% of soman. At the same time, the facility is carrying out high-temperature processing of the reaction masses, over 14 thousand tons of which have already been destroyed. 98.9% of complex design munitions are eliminated. All work on the destruction of chemical weapons will be completed by December 2015,” Sergei Palamarchuk said.

According to him, the total amount of weapons being destroyed at the facility is about seven thousand tons, which is 17.2% of the total reserves of the country.

As the press service of the regional government told news agency “PenzaNews,” the work is carried out within the federal target program “Destruction of chemical weapons in the Russian Federation.”

Currently, seven modern high-tech facilities for the storage and destruction of chemical weapons operate in Russia: “Gorny” in the Saratov region, “Kambarka” and “Kizner” Udmurtia, “Maradykovsky” in the Kirov region, “Leonidovka” in Penza region, “Shchuchye” in the Kurgan region and “Pochep” in the Bryansk region.
