Penza, 2 September 2014. PenzaNews. An environmental campaign “Sura River Day” will take place in Penza on September 6-13.

As Igor Pantyusha, chairman of the regional Russian Geographical Society branch, told news agency “PenzaNews,” the event will be split in two stages.

“From September6 to September 12, we are planning to clean the riverside of trash, and on Saturday, September 13, an ecological festival will take place,” the agency interlocutor said.

He added that the campaign will involve school and university students, environmental NGO volunteers, travel club members, as well as Penza residents who care about preserving the nature.

“On Saturday, September 6, the activists will start gathering by the “Rostok” monument at 10.00. The campaign itself will begin at 11.00,” Igor Pantyusha said.

In 2012, Penza regional branch of the Russian Geographical Society launched an initiative to institute a “Sura River Day” – a novelty ecological holiday for the region. During the campaign that took place during that day, the riverside was cleaned of trash, and tons of garbage were discarded with the help of city officials.

Since then, the campaign became an annual event.
