“At the landfill we have a sorting line. But if sorting is done where trucks come with molded six times compacted debris, it will surely fail. It's the stone age. We must move to more reliable practices. It is wiser to sort garbage where it appears, so that recycling organizations received it as a ready-made product,” Yuri Ilyin said during the visit of the selective garbage collection site, equipped near house No. 174 in Ternovskogo Street.

He explained that the use of three specified trashcans — for paper; plastic, glass bottles and aluminum cans; as well as other waste — is the first step towards the realization of the project of sorting and recycling of garbage.

Yuri Ilyin also noted that Penza is guided in this work by Zarechny, where separate waste collection appeared a few years ago.

“This is still only the beginning, but the process should be constant. The most important thing is that people had understanding that waste should be sorted at least in a few categories. One pile should be thrown in one container and other waste -— in the other. This is the main objective of the project. The development of infrastructure will go on with people getting used to it,” he stressed.

In turn, Pavel Alexandrov, head of housing and communal services of Penza, drew attention to the benefits of separate waste collection.

“The importance of this is related more to the environment, because plastic does not decompose for a long time — it is better to recycle and reuse it. It also saves energy,” he said.

He said that currently in Penza, there are 70 sites equipped with trashcans for plastic bottles, and 20 — with waste paper containers.

“In the future, the number of such sites will increase, so I would like to encourage citizens to separately throw garbage in the places already equipped for that, in order to protect the environment and ecology,” Pavel Alexandrov added.
