“When I had to undergo a surgery in Moscow, they did it poorly, I nearly went down under. And that was an academician who operated on me. I nearly snuffed, pardon my French. They barely managed to recover me,” Vasily Bochkarev said during his discussion on the quality of medical education during a meeting with chief medical officers along with professors of medical universities and colleges held in the Burdenko clinical hospital on Friday, May 15.

Moreover, the head of the region said how he had to pay a nurse extra every time so that she would not miss his vein during injections.

“Even though the CMO is my friend and his wife comes from our Penza. […] If you don’t pay, they go for such low blows. You think we have it better in Penza? There are much less good [doctors] than those of other quality. And this shows how poorly we are teaching them,” Vasily Bochkarev remarked.

According to him, this situation is partially caused by inflated egos of authorities, doctors and medical professors.

“And I am not excluding anybody, neither myself nor you. We are giving away certificates and diplomas that are not backed up by the knowledge. Let’s be clear,” the governor stressed.
