The competition brought together teams from armies of Russia, Kazakhstan and China.

They are joined by the team of the Penza Artillery Engineering Institute, who are performing outside of the main competition.

The event is dividied into four parts, the first two dedicated to repairing and KamAZ towing of D-30A howitzers and ZU-23 anti-aircraft mounts.

The third stage is a weapons biathlon that features a firearms repair relay.

The final stage, an all-included relay, will be held on August 9.

In the address at the opening ceremony, the Penza region governor Ivan Belozertsev pointed out that the International Army Games became a Military Olympics for militarymen.

“The Army Games rightfully became the most respected military competition, and we are proud to have been chosen by the Minister of Defense Sergey Shoygu to host the games in Penza,” he said.

The competitors will be able to enjoy a comprehensive course of cultural entertainment in the region, the governor added.

In turn, Lieutenant Colonel Vladimir Safonov, who is representing Kazakhstan at the Games, thanked the organizers for the invitation.

“I want to point out that the Army Games help contestants exchange their experience, find new friends and socialize with each other. We met many interesting people during the preparation process. […] I believe this will have a positive effect on the relations between our countries,” he explained.

The opening event also featured performances of motorcycle drivers, gymnasts, as well as drum and fife orchestra concert and a fire juggling show.
