Penza, 26 April 2017. PenzaNews. Commemorative events dedicated to the 31st anniversary of the largest technological disaster in the history of humankind – the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant – were held in Penza on Wednesday, April 26.

One of them was conducted in 8 Marta street by the monument honouring the victims of nuclear catastrophes.

Participants of the event bedded out young plants in the alley, took part in a rally and laid flowers to the monument.

Turning to those present, the deputy head of the Penza region government Oleg Yagov noted that it is important to keep the memory of the people who eliminated the consequences of the catastrophe.

"Today we honour the memory of those who sacrificed their health and life eliminating the results of the accident and now live among us. But for their dedication, the consequences of the catastrophe would have been dozens, hundreds of times worse for the whole Eastern Europe," he said.

As it was reported by the press service of the regional government, thematic events will be conducted in educational institutions of all areas of the Penza region.
