"After the decline in the incidence of rabies in animals in 2016-2017, in 2018, there was a sharp deterioration in the situation: over 11 months 68 cases were registered, which is 3.1 times more than in the same period last year," the text clarifies.

It adds that the incidence of rabies in animals was registered in 20 municipalities, with more than 23% of cases accounting for foxes, almost 65% — for cats and dogs, and about 12% — for farm animals.

"In 2018, the greatest number of cases of rabies was registered in the Kolyshleysky, Bekovsky, Bessonovsky, Luninsky, Serdobsky, Penza and Shemysheysky areas. Due to the unfavourable epizootic situation with rabies and the activity of its natural hotbeds, the threat of the disease in people increased," the message says.
